About Réunion

Réunion is an island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 200 kilometres south west of Mauritius, the nearest island. The island is 63 kilometres long and 45 kilometres wide and the area covers 2,512 square kilometres. Réunion is a French colony and lies 9 360 km far from the capital city of France.

The island was formed by a volcanic activity. Initially, a volcano emerged from the bottom of the sea approximately two million years ago. And then it was followed by the other ones million and a half years later. While the first volcano ceased its activity twenty thousand years ago, the second one - Piton de la Fournaise is still active.

There are thick woodlands on the slopes of both volcanos. Cultivated land and cities, including the capital city of Saint-Denis, are concentrated on the lowlands surroundings the coast. There are also three calderas on Réunion: the Cirque de Salazie, the Cirque de Cilaos and the Cirque de Mafate. The last one is accessible only on foot.

Hiking - Grande Randonnée 2

GR2 leads from St. Denis to the city St. Philippe on the southeast corner of the island and takes about two weeks (the duration of the journey depends on the speed and the chosen route).

The hiking tour goes through the calderas Cirque de Mafate and Cirque de Cilaos, leads to the highest peak Piton des Neiges (3.070 m) and continues forward through the plains in the centre of the island to the Piton de la Fournaise. Then it is declining to the coast.
