Cilaos is a town and community of approximately 6000 residents. It is located in the centre of the island, in a caldera of the altitude of 1214 m. Cilaos is a nice and quiet town. It is full of flowers and we can find a pond (the Mare Joncs) there too. It is a starting point for walking tours or motor trips and it is also the gate of the great hiking trails GR R1 (A tour to Piton des Neiges along the three calderas) and the GR R2 crisscrossing the whole island.
